Summer Infections in Children: What Every Parent Should Know
By Dr. Raghava, Consultant Pediatrician, MedUnited Hospitals, Amalapuram
Introduction
Every summer, I see a noticeable rise in pediatric cases at our hospital – from dehydration and viral fevers to gastrointestinal and respiratory infections.
Children are more vulnerable during this season due to heat exposure, dehydration and increased chances of contamination through food and water.
As a pediatrician, I strongly believe that awareness and early action can prevent most summer-related illnesses in children.
Common Summer Infections in Children
Gastrointestinal Infections (Loose Motions & Vomiting)
Contaminated food and water are the most common causes.
Symptoms:
- Loose stools
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Fever
If not treated early, this can quickly lead to dehydration, which is one of the most common emergencies in children during summer.
Viral Fevers
Seasonal viral infections tend to increase due to temperature changes and exposure.
Symptoms:
- High fever
- Body pain
- Weakness
- Loss of appetite
Respiratory Issues
Dust, heat and poor air quality can trigger:
- Allergic cough
- Bronchitis
- Asthma flare-ups
Children with pre-existing respiratory conditions need extra care during summer.
Skin Infections & Heat Rashes
Excess sweating can lead to:
- Fungal infections
- Heat rashes
- Skin irritation
Dehydration (Most Common & Dangerous)
One of the biggest risks in summer.
Warning Signs Parents Should Watch:
- Dry lips and mouth
- Reduced urine
- Irritability or excessive sleepiness
- Sunken eyes
- Fast heartbeat
When Should You See a Doctor Immediately?
As a pediatrician, I advise parents not to ignore these symptoms:
- Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
- High fever for more than 2 days
- Child becomes dull, inactive or unusually sleepy
- Difficulty in breathing
- No urine output for several hours
Early consultation can prevent complications and hospitalization.
Prevention Tips Every Parent Should Follow
✔ Keep Your Child Hydrated
- Encourage water intake frequently
- Include coconut water, buttermilk and fresh fruits
✔ Avoid Outside & Contaminated Food
- Say no to roadside food
- Avoid sugary and carbonated drinks
✔ Maintain Hygiene
- Wash hands regularly
- Ensure clean drinking water
✔ Dress Comfortably
- Use loose, cotton clothing
- Avoid synthetic fabrics
✔ Limit Sun Exposure
- Avoid going out between 11 AM – 4 PM
- Use caps, umbrellas when stepping out
Best Summer Diet for Children
- Water-rich fruits: watermelon, muskmelon oranges
- Home-cooked light meals
- Fresh curd and buttermilk
Avoid oily, fried and junk foods – these can worsen infections and digestion issues.
Doctor’s Advice
In my experience at MedUnited Hospitals, many severe cases we see during summer are preventable.
Most complications arise because:
